This was a global war initiated by Germany, Italy, and Japan. Initially, the war unfolded as a conflict between imperialist countries, but with the progress of national liberation movements in various parts of Eurasia and the participation of the Soviet Union, the war took on a stronger character of anti-fascism. More than 60 countries and regions, involving a population of over 2 billion people, were involved in this war. In early 1945, the Soviet and British-American forces advanced into German territory, and on May 2, the Soviet army occupied Berlin. On May 8 of the same year, Germany declared unconditional surrender. On August 8, 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan.
