Born in Yamamoto Village, Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture (now Iida City). Graduated from Waseda University, English Department. While a student, he entered Tsubouchi Shoyo's Literary Association Theater Research Institute and served as an actor and assistant director. In 1911, at Shoyo's recommendation, he was adopted by Ito, the daughter of Mokuami Kawatake. In 1923, he became a lecturer at Waseda University, later a professor. He served as the director of the Theater Museum and researched theater history, focusing on Kabuki history and comparative theater. He was honored as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1967.
