Hideo Yoshino (吉野 秀雄, Yoshino Hideo, August 8, 1902 (Meiji 35) – January 13, 1967 (Showa 42)) was a Japanese tanka poet, calligrapher, and scholar of Japanese literature. Born in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, he established a unique position in modern tanka poetry. Biography 1902: Born in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. His father was the elder brother of Sakuzo Yoshino, and Hideo was Sakuzo's nephew. 1920s: Entered Waseda University's Department of Japanese Literature, but dropped out due to poor health. He struggled with pulmonary tuberculosis throughout his life, while continuing to write poetry and essays. Around 1930: Worked with his own style, independent of "Araragi." He left behind many tanka poems that valued spirituality and clarity. Post-war: His poetry from his sickbed gained attention. In particular, his keen observations of nature and his view of life were expressed with a serene dignity. 1967: Died. Age 64.
