■ Description Product Name: Hamakita Windmill (5-tier), also known as Tenryu Windmill Description: In the Tenryu River, gabions made by packing stones into bamboo baskets were used for revetments. It is said that the Hamakita windmill originated from the technique of weaving bamboo. Thin strips of bamboo skin are shaved and the core is woven into a round shape like a bamboo basket. One end of the bamboo strips is extended outward radially to form 8 arrows, and colored paper is pasted on the tips. By lengthening the core shaft, several tiers of these windmills can be stacked. The size of the windmill blades varies, with three tiers (large, medium, and small) to five tiers, and some have as many as nine tiers. Mr. Sadao Matsushita used to make them by hand in the traditional way, but unfortunately, Mr. Matsushita passed away around the year 2000. This is an item from a collection being sorted.
