"Nipopo" means "small wooden child" or "doll" in the Ainu language. It is believed to grant any wish and bring happiness, and it is said that it was placed in the homes of the Ainu people as a charm to protect against illness and injury. It is also known as a souvenir from Hokkaido. Some are hand-carved by inmates of Abashiri Prison, wishing for rehabilitation. I bought it in Hokkaido and displayed it.
