This ornament is said to be a yorishiro (a thing that serves as a temporary dwelling for a spirit) of a zashiki-warashi (a house spirit) that appeared from the storehouse of an old merchant's house. It is said that the moment the long-sealed wooden box was opened, the air in the room shivered and a faint sound of footsteps was heard approaching on the tatami mats. Immediately after that, a young voice whispered to the person who reached for the box: "I've been waiting." At the same time, the sweet scent of flowers drifted from somewhere, and the central red amber shone with exceptional brilliance. This event is said to have been testified to by everyone present. According to old records, this treasure was placed at the head of the householder's pillow on the night the zashiki-warashi appeared. From then on, the house prospered without end and was protected from illness and disaster. Conversely, it is said that during the period when this treasure was kept away, misfortune and illness continued, and fortune returned as soon as it was welcomed back. The deep red amber in the center symbolizes the core of the zashiki-warashi's soul, and the surrounding pale gold light represents an invisible protective barrier. It is believed that the zashiki-warashi will visit those who have a strong connection with it, protecting and guiding their family fortune, financial luck, and relationships for a long time.
