This is a Gigaku mask of Karura (迦楼羅). I purchased it in 2014 on Yahoo! Auctions, in the antique category. The seller seemed to have identified it as a Karasutengu (crow tengu). Karura is a Buddhist guardian deity, originating from Garuda, the sacred fire bird in Indian mythology. It has the head of a bird and the body of a human, a half-bird, half-human form. Famous Karura statues can be found at Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara and Sanjusangen-do Temple in Kyoto. It appears to be dry lacquer (kanshitsu), but the small areas where the base is chipped reveal a white color, suggesting it's made of plaster rather than dry lacquer. The original seller listed it as being made of pottery. It has a dignified air with its heavy color scheme. I have displayed it on the wall, hanging from a hook, for over 10 years. A Karura mask made of dry lacquer or wood carving would cost tens of thousands of yen, so this piece, with its old dry lacquer-like coloring, can be enjoyed casually as interior decoration. Due to its shape, it's difficult to provide size measurements, but: The widest part of the head, i.e., the width between the ears, is approximately 24 cm. The longest vertical length, from the top of the crest to the bottom edge, is approximately 32 cm. The protrusion of the beak is about 16 cm. The protrusion of the crest at the brow is about 17 cm. When I tried to weigh it on a kitchen scale, it maxed out, so it weighs over 1 kilogram. It will be shipped in an old wooden box that once contained some tools, along with cushioning material. Please note that this wooden box is not made of plain wood or paulownia. If you don't need the wooden box, please let me know. The wooden box has a protruding lid, and two thin boards are attached to the top for viewing. The external dimensions of the box, including these, are approximately 42 cm x 30 cm, with a height of approximately 24 cm.
