⚫︎ Seal Carving: "Ikkijikki" (一饋十起) Reading: ikki-jikki Kun'yomi: ikkini jikkisu / ikkini to tabidatsu Meaning: Standing up ten times during a single meal. An analogy for enthusiastically welcoming guests to listen to their opinions. "饋" (ki) means meal. This comes from a story in China where King Yu of the Xia dynasty earnestly sought wise men to assist him in good governance. He would stand up and stop eating ten times during a meal to meet with the wise men who came to visit. From "Huainanzi" Fanlunxun. ⚫︎ Seal Carving: "Kokusaku no Kiyou" (告朔餼羊) Meaning: An analogy for the idea that long-standing customs and annual events should not be abolished without reason. Also, an analogy for something that has lost its substance and only the form remains. "Kokusaku" was a ceremony performed in the Zhou dynasty of China, where a sheep was offered to the ancestors in the temple on the first day of each month. "Kiyou" refers to the sacrificial sheep offered during the Kokusaku ceremony. In the state of Lu, the Kokusaku ceremony declined, and only the form of offering a sheep remained. When Zigong said, "It's meaningless, so we should stop offering the sheep," Confucius opposed, saying, "You think the sheep is a waste, but I think it's more of a waste for the ceremony itself to disappear," and regretted the decline of the ceremony.
