This is a suzuri (inkstone) that my late grandfather (an art teacher) apparently purchased from a specialty store in Kyoto when he was young. I was told by family that he used it for sumi-e (ink wash painting) and calligraphy, and that it cost around 60,000 yen at the time of purchase. Considering the prices back then, it must have been a very expensive inkstone. The stone is hard and fine-grained, and the polishing is meticulous. The dragon carving has a three-dimensional feel, and the overall construction is solid and imposing. It comes with a lid, making it practical for use, and suitable for both storage and display. Although it has a design reminiscent of a Tang dynasty inkstone, it has no markings. It is natural to assume that it is a **"high-quality inkstone with a highly artistic design, hand-carved by a domestic craftsman in post-war Kyoto, modeled after Tang dynasty items."** It is a piece suitable for both practical use and for enjoying as a decorative item. ※ It will be shipped in its original storage box.
