This is a lined nagajuban (long undergarment) made of fine crepe silk (seika chirimen) depicting the Funaboko and Yamaboko (Takayama Hoko) from the "Gion Matsuri E-maki" (Gion Festival Picture Scroll) by Yokoyama Kazan, a painter active in Kyoto in the late Edo period. It appears that a fan is drawn on the left front hem of the juban. The overall color of the juban is a slightly muted, light greenish-blue, close to sabi-asagi (rusty light blue), dyed in a gradation. The Funaboko depicted on the back of the juban is said to be derived from the military ship (Atake-bune) of Empress Jingu, who, according to the "Nihon Shoki," was pregnant but disguised herself as a man and won the conquest of the three Korean kingdoms (Silla). The other Hoko is Takayama, one of the Yamaboko that paraded as "Takatukai-yama" before the Onin War. I seem to remember being taught over 50 years ago, when I was working at a kimono wholesaler in Kyoto's Muromachi district, that Yamaboko are called that because mountains have trees, and the decorations of those trees are attached to the top of the Hoko. Even now, many Hoko can be seen in the Muromachi Shijo area, but frankly, I wasn't very interested in those origins. Rather, I remember that during the Gion Festival, the Hoko blocked the roads, so the trucks that transported the goods couldn't pass, and we couldn't collect or deliver, so we had a long vacation. During the vacation, I often went to the Sea of Japan with my colleagues. The lining of the juban sleeves is muso (double-layered), and the lining is a thin, greenish-gray habutae silk. Both the front and back are silk.
